Festival Volunteers Frequently Asked Questions
The following questions and answers apply to the Spring 2013 Very Special Arts Festival:
How do I sign up myself or my group to volunteer?
Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator with questions and to sign up to volunteer.
What times will you will need volunteers?
Volunteers are needed for the following shifts:
Set-Up: 7:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Festival/Funshops: 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Groups should plan to arrive at 8:30 a.m.
Clean-Up: 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
What will volunteers be doing during each shift?
During the set-up shift, volunteers will be asked to help unload our truck, move tables and chairs, cover tables and chairs with paper, hang banners and signs, assist with hanging the visual art show, etc.
The clean-up shift is the reverse of the set-up shift and includes moving trash to the dumpsters.
During the festival, most volunteers will be involved in Funshops. Funshops are volunteer-friendly, hands-on art activities. Students attending the Festival visit several Funshop stations to create small pieces of art to take home. Volunteers will be helping students with the art activities. No experience or expertise is required and it's a lot of fun!
How many volunteers do you need?
We need 75 to 100 volunteers total for the event. Individuals and groups are absolutely welcome to join us! We do ask that volunteers sign up with us, individually or as a group, so that we know how many volunteers to expect.
Will volunteers be working individually or in groups?
Each Funshop is staffed by 2 to 4 volunteers depending on the activity. If people want to stick together they are usually able to.
What are the age requirements for volunteering?
Any age volunteer is welcome. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Are there any physical requirements for volunteering at the Festival?
The Very Special Arts Festival is for people of all abilities. Funshop volunteers are usually standing but chairs are available at each Funshop station. The set up and clean up shifts require unloading and loading of the truck, moving tables and chairs, hanging signs. Please contact us with any specific questions.
Will Funshop volunteers be responsible with coming up with the art activities and supplies or will all that be provided? Funshops are complete volunteer-friendly art projects and contain everything needed, including materials, instructions and examples.
Is there any training required?
There is no real training involved. Volunteers will be briefed upon check-in and given time to become familiar with their assignment prior to students arriving at the Festival. ICDT! staff and experienced volunteers will be on-site to answer questions.
Where should I park?
There is plenty of street parking available near the Coloma Community Center. Street parking permit requirements near the Coloma Center will be waived during the event. Please be courteous and make sure you are parked legally. Don’t park in handicap spaces and don’t block driveways. We want to keep the neighbors happy and we don’t want you to get a ticket.
We also encourage you to take public transportation. Sacramento Regional Transit routes include bus 15 and Light Rail, with stops at the 48th St. station and is within walking distance.

Who should volunteers check in with upon arrival?
Volunteers should check-in at the "Volunteer Check-in" station located on the back lawn at the Coloma Center.
Will drinks and snacks be provided or should they plan to bring their own?
Snacks are provided, such as coffee & muffins in the morning, cold water throughout the day. Pizza is provided for all volunteers after Funshops are packed up, around 12:30.
What is the recommended attire?
Casual attire, appropriate for working with kids and art. Funshop volunteers may be working with paint, glue, glitter, etc. and should only wear attire that they are comfortable getting messy in. We recommend bringing a hat and apron.
Will volunteers be working outdoors in the sun or inside?
Volunteers should plan on being outside during their shift. We do make an effort to place Funshop stations in areas shaded by trees whenever possible. However, as the day progresses, the shade will shift. Volunteers should check the weather forecast for the day and dress appropriately. Sunscreen and hats are recommended.
Is the Very Special Arts Festival open to the public and is there an entrance fee?
The Very Special Arts Festival is presented as a celebration and showcase of the work of student artists in the I Can Do That! Artists-in-Schools program. The approximately 1500 students who have participated in the program for the past semester will be attending the Festival as a field trip during the school day. The Festival is open to the public and there is no fee to attend.
